Adding metallic silicon to refractory materials can first react with oxygen to form new mineral phases that close pores, increase density, prevent slag and iron infiltration, and improve the product’s high temperature resistance, wear resistance, and oxidation resistance. In the metallurgical casting industry, metallic silicon is used as a non iron based alloy additive and silicon steel alloying agent to improve the hardenability of steel.
